Marie-Odile Salati is Professor of American Literature at the University of Savoie at Chambéry. She wrote a PhD dissertation on the late works of Joseph Conrad then specialized in the American novel of the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. She is the author of critical articles on Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, H.P. Lovecraft, John Steinbeck and more specifically Henry James and Ernest Hemingway, and now takes a particular interest in the novelists’ struggles with language to represent reality in industrial America. She has produced a book-length study on Henry James’s struggling representation of modernity in The American Scene, which was published by Michel Houdiard Publishing Company in June 2014. She has also co-organized several conferences on the subject of surface in literature and the visual arts at the University of Savoie and been a co-editor of the ensuing publications.
